We interviewed Blanca Suárez and Alberto San Juan, co-stars of El cuarto pasajero, the new road movie by Álex de la Iglesia that is now available in theaters. A comedy whose filming was marked by the pandemic, but in which the viewer’s laughter and enjoyment are one hundred percent guaranteed.

You premiere El cuarto pasajero directed by Álex de la Iglesia, how has it been working with him?
A: Working with Álex is in any case a passionate experience because he is. He is someone who goes from enthusiasm to sinking, through anger, through the full range of emotions possible and the seven deadly sins. I see him as a sea captain who liked the storm. If the sea is calm, he summons Poseidon to move the waves because he is a guy who handles himself very well in the middle of battle. I think that’s why he is a director and producer, because he likes to get into the thousand fregaos. Personally, I have felt that I have gotten along very well with him and I would happily repeat.
B: It’s been quite an experience, well, it was the third time I’d worked with him and yes, he’s not afraid of troubled waters or agitation, he handles it well.

We know that your characters meet through a ride-sharing app and from there feelings begin to emerge. Are you one of those who prefer this era of meeting people through social networks or better face to face from the beginning?
B: I have no experience in meeting anyone through social networks hahaha. A priori, times have changed and I suppose the way of meeting other people has also changed. Everything is evolving, I’m not going to say for the better, but it evolves somewhere, and I think many things are lost. We miss a lot by staying behind the screen, in every way, not just flirting.
A: I don’t have networks, so I don’t have experience either. But hey, he could have known by WhatsApp or by email although that has not been the case. I believe that human communication is very good and everything that contributes to making it more fluid and clear is better, what happens is what Blanca says, networks and the Internet contribute to facilitating communication between human beings or not, it depends on their use . We know that in adolescence it seems that it does a lot of damage, trying to give an image that you think improves you, at a stage in which you ask yourself who you are and then suddenly, that clashes with the real perception you have of yourself and it creates a lot of problems at that age. And well, I think like her, that there is nothing compared to you to you, to the personal encounter. If it is already difficult to understand each other in person, the more filters there are, the more difficult it is to understand each other.

What do you think your characters Julián and Lorena share with Alberto and Blanca?
B: I never know how to answer these kinds of questions, but because in the end one, at least in my case, tries to be as little alike as possible, but it’s so difficult. He will have things in common, many, but I would try not to make him look alike, not because I don’t like the character but because of digging inside yourself, that he is different and further away. Of course they will be alike in things because they are not crazy or strange characters.
A: Yes, I believe that the fantasy of every actress or actor is to be another or another, but inevitably you do it and you will always be there. The best movie actor in the world, in my opinion, which is Marlon Brando never stops being Marlon Brando, but he plays different characters and who wouldn’t want to be him as an actor? Things with which I identify with my character, because I am also a bit neurotic, insecure, fearful, but of course, who is not like that to some extent? And I think that for this reason, viewers can empathize with Julián, with Lorena or with the other characters because they are human beings and in the end, human beings are different mixtures of three or four ingredients that are always the same.

Most of the film takes place on the road, what was it like shooting those more static scenes, without many places where the action takes place?
B: For us it was comfortable, I think the technical part was more complicated and it was a challenge, lights, camera shots, planes…, in fact there were different cars and there were several that were literally cut in different ways to fit the camera inside and give more play to that situation because otherwise it would be very limited in that sense.
A: Sure, it’s true, for us it was very comfortable, in a car it’s great hahaha. It was a very particular shoot and, in part, a very difficult experience because it was heavily marked by the pandemic. In fact, it stopped for two or three weeks because we caught several COVIDs, including two of the four protagonists. So, the actors couldn’t eat with the rest of the team, there were isolation measures, everything was weird. We were shooting in Madrid and they asked us not to go home to sleep, the context at that time made it a very atypical shoot. Then there was also a lot of filming on the set because in this film there is a lot of post-production work and digital issues. Always the four of us, almost always together, inside the car, but as Blanca says, sitting isn’t bad.

Of all the moments that this film offers, which one do you remember being the most fun to record? Any anecdote you want to share?
B: Ugh, it’s been almost 3 years since it was shot, but man, I remember when we shot the end of the movie on the motorcycle, which was quite curious because they built a kind of mechanical bull with a motorcycle that simulated that it was jumping and everything, and they put us upstairs to make some plans that could make it look like we were driving it and it was surreal, we laughed a lot there. This that if you see it from the outside takes away the charm of the movies hahaha.
A: What memory do you have hahaha. Then Álex is also a funny guy and Ernesto is also very funny and if he wants to make you laugh a lot. Even though that was a shoot where everyone was wearing a mask, it was a leaden environment. And now it continues to be worn, but there is no color.

If you had a trip like this, what do you think you would do?
A: If I were the fifth passenger and I went with those four companions, I would have a good time if we are talking about a movie, if it happened in reality… not so much, it is a trip in which they hit you, shoot you, you are in constant danger.
B: It’s likely that I didn’t get to the end, I don’t get to Madrid, I prefer to walk hahaha, not because of the people but because of what happens on the way.

Blanca’s mini interview

After all your career as an actress, do you think you have found the balance between what people expect of you and what you expect yourself?
No, and I don’t think it’s something I’ve ever considered. I don’t know what people expect of me, let alone myself. One does what she can as she can at the moment in which it is her turn to do it and you make an effort. It’s very easy, in the case of the film you see it almost two years later and you say “here it is…” and of course, because at that moment it was your moment, you had to do it that way and I was more or less satisfied.

What do you consider to be the greatest learning you have had thanks to your career as an actress?
Well, surely what I just said, facing people makes you understand at some point in life that not everyone can like you and that that’s okay, that it’s not bad at all. And also, every day in this profession they teach you the smallest things that you thought you had already learned from home, because you have to relearn them every day. And also, you learn a lot about yourself, about how you are, about the things that you are good at and what you are not, the ones that scare you and if you do your part a little, you even learn to manage them, you begin at least to live with it.

Álex always plays to express a little the miseries of the human being, how someone is transformed, depending on the circumstances. In his cinema the plot and the characters are twisted in such a way that the film explodes in itself. I play Lorena, an apparently normal girl who comes to Madrid to earn a living, but she gets together with the other characters and everything gets complicated. Her life will no longer be the same.

El Test, its other premiere, asks if we all have a price, based on the dilemma: What would you choose 100,000 euros today or 1 million in 10 years? What would you do?
I am one of those who thinks in the million. I would wait. I would be patient, yes.

He just turned 34. What adjective do you give to this moment in your life?
I would not put a specific adjective. It is not a defining moment in my life. Due to the peculiarity of this work, no stage is the same as the previous one, you always face new things. Your life is constantly evolving. But at any time, I always try to touch a lot of ground, that there is at least one part of me that is not constantly changing.

With this job you will never get bored.
This hooks, it’s quite addictive, but it has a double face. Instability prevents you from getting bored, but at the same time it causes insecurity in many ways. You have to accept it.

How do you live with the feeling of always being exposed to the opinion of others, the pressure on the physical?
Depends on the day and when you get caught. This profession is like that, there is no way around it, but sometimes you ask yourself: Why do I have to accept certain things? This is a job, it does not mean that your whole being has to be always exposed to that public eye, that they observe you as a human being.

It has always marked the border of their intimacy. Is she respected?
One does what she can, then whoever is in front of you gets what she wants and you have to deal with it and put a stop to that excessive interest in your personal life. Nobody cares about certain information except me and whoever I decide. Anyone (I imagine you too) does not talk about their intimacy with all their friends but chooses a few people to vent. If it’s what everyone does in their lives… I’m not going to tell them to the whole of Spain! I am very careful not to cross that private line, also in networks.

Recently, she stopped that eternal “gender” question again: if she wants to be a mother. What other issues bother you?
They have been asking me since I was 19 years old when I am going to be a mother and get married. I’m surprised they keep insisting. It doesn’t happen with boys. They are asked about their personal life, but there are questions that they continue to label as “women’s”. In my case, seriously, every time they see me, the question falls. It is a very crazy thing. I think it is something that should not be asked of anyone, out of politeness. They are violent topics, very personal and that do not concern anyone. They are not light questions.

Where do you want to direct your career? Jump to Hollywood? Television, cinema?
In this job, I don’t see it clearly to mark a path for you. Fantasizing brings with it frustration, if you project something and it doesn’t happen. It’s such an uncertain profession that this afternoon I could receive an offer or a film that’s already closed suddenly drop. My experience tells me that the most practical and healthy thing is to decide on what comes up. Fewer headaches. Yes to be clear here yes or here no, but life itself is a surprise.

Any red lines?
No, not a priori, for the same reason. You have to see yourself in situations, what life brings you or what it doesn’t bring you and what you must agree to do.

Jaguar provided projection without leaving the country: the powerful global television against the cinema in crisis. Lately he has opted for the cinema. Do you have any series in sight?
Right now no, I have coincided with a lot of cinema, true. One does what is left, depending on what you are valued for. After the pandemic, a lot is produced, but theaters still need an audience. Although platforms are here to stay, cinema must coexist with them. I wish.

When did you decide on this job?
It was emerging. When I was 7 years old I wanted to start theater because my friends had a great time. He could have stayed in one more after-school, but he hooked me. From there I went to theater school, then to a micro-company, to a test… and until now.

How do you build the characters?
Depends. Sometimes you have to document a lot, other times it’s one hundred percent fiction and you create from scratch. Dedication, the same, because you have to be serious and rigorous, but each role and project require different energies.

Do you prefer the director to give a lot of directions or freedom?
The more information he provides about how he wants things and guides you clearly, the better. He is the boss and you have to pay attention to him. The best thing is that the whole team flows, the more flexibility we all have, the better because we all contribute things. I don’t have the absolute truth, my work is also nourished by makeup and hairdressing, by the director’s notes…

With Almodóvar or De la Iglesia I imagine that you have to be docile.
With all directors, and especially with such iconic filmmakers and with such particular worlds, one has to know who is in front of them and what they want. You must be open to entering his world, not fighting to do something else. His world is this, you know in what code you are moving. In general, in life you have to know how to place yourself, in everything.

Looks like he gets it…
I try to be sane and located, because the profession already has a good part of madness. But I try not to let my work be governed by that because it’s like a kind of recipe in which you have to put the right ingredients for each thing, so that you don’t miss too much of anything.

What is wrong with this job?
The schedules! Well, it is better to say the uncertainty. Knowing that today you have a job and maybe tomorrow you won’t. But when you are already in flour, rolling, the change of schedules makes your body and your vital energy go crazy. One day you have to be like a rose at five in the morning, another day the other way around. You must be very flexible and surrender: it is so.

He has said that he tries hard to keep his feet on the ground. How do you get it from the bubble of success? Her boyfriend is also an actor, Javier Rey, his day to day is special, between events…
Look, I would turn it around. In my life, the most real thing is my little personal bubble, where I am, my friends from school, my family, my animals, my house. Where my refuge is and people look at me with the most real eyes. The other part of my life is a reality too, it’s not fictional, but it’s my job, which is really cool and fun, it allows you to be whatever you want. But real life is when you wake up with your makeup off and make yourself a coffee.

What would you say is missing from your life?
I think it would be bold to ask, from the privileged place in which I find myself. We all want more, of course, in the good sense of the word. Let things continue to happen to us, but I always tell myself: ‘Appreciate what you have more and don’t ask’. And if you don’t ask, maybe surprise things will come to you that are even cooler.

What can’t you stand in others?
The little honesty, the lack of sense of humor. And also the people who talk nonstop and don’t listen.

I don’t have slogans, because what works for you today probably won’t work for you tomorrow.

What are you afraid of?
As a child she was very afraid of the dark, something of that still remains. But above all, my great fear is that the people I love will disappear.

What is your best virtue?
I think calm, in general. I lose it from time to time, like everyone else, but broadly speaking it could be that one. Let’s see, we all have a little bit of stress, but when the press asks you, you’re not going to tell them about your miseries either.

What would you change about her character?
I would like to be less lazy.

Do you feel that your beauty is emphasized more than your talent?
I haven’t really felt that way. I think there has been a balance in that sense, for how these things are usually handled in the media. I have been complimented and that, why not say it, is fine. But I also felt taken seriously. And that they talked about my work. Disappointed in politicians in our country? Who gives you confidence?
Trust… man, I have hope because since I’ve lost it completely… The political world is something that I talk about, debate, in my personal life, but publicly it’s something so tricky… and it’s sad that it’s like that, huh. but to enter depending on what debates, it’s not that I don’t feel like it, because one would start talking and could blurt out anything. But I think it’s better to do what you have to do in private. That is my option today, tomorrow who knows.

In Jaguar, she is a Nazi-hunting spy. Are you worried about the rise of the extreme right?
Sure, of course. She worries me about everything, machismo, war conflicts… I encompass it all in that surprise that basic things, drawers, values ​​with which my parents have educated me, are suddenly in danger.

How should we respond?
I wish I had an answer. She would have done it already. We live in an age of individualism. Or we move as a group and look at each other without thinking only about our good or bad future, we and the entire planet. Very uncertain, I see it that way.

Neither on good days nor on bad days do I pay too much attention to comments. Luckily, they are usually wonderful but there are also those that are not. Networks are complicated. The good is not so good and the bad is not so bad. Posting comments on the Internet is very easy and sometimes we are not aware that what we write can affect the person. I don’t look at the comments in detail, I don’t think it gives me much, either for better or for worse. I include the compliments. It is precious and to be thankful for and the ego must be fed, but you cannot feed yourself only on the good, on people who, even if you do things wrong, will tell you: “it doesn’t matter, it’s great!” What is the percentage of reality in the comments?

In private I participate, I am active, but I have never known how to use my visible face to support causes. Being a champion of certain struggles, publishing it on the networks is difficult for me, I do not know very well how to manage it. What do I participate in and what not? I have the dilemma of not knowing how to do it, so for now I do it privately. It is a pending subject for me. There are a lot of people who are mean with themes and I have to learn from them how they do it.

How do you imagine yourself in 20 years?
I can’t imagine… 20 years ago you told me what I was going to do and I would have been amazed. In 20 years I think my life is going to change a lot, I’m sure and hopefully, not because I want it to change but because evolution is necessary and we must look for it. I hope I never get stuck. I hope to continue doing the same. But what I want most is that the people I love are well, the rest… May life surprise me!

Blanca and Rubén, Rubén and Blanca, are ‘old’ acquaintances. They met for the first time in 2015, when they shot the miniseries Lo que escondían sus ojos (2016) and six years later and in another time. Because if their debut as a -cinematographic- couple took place in post-war Madrid, now they meet again in current Bilbao and on their way to the capital, united by Álex De La Iglesia and a car-sharing application in the film El Cuarto Pasajero.

The season of great premieres in Spanish cinema continues unstoppable in this end of 2022, although El Cuarto Pasajero was filmed in the summer of 2021. Blanca and Rubén remember the somewhat eventful shooting, in those months in which the pandemic did not give truce: the actor (Isla de la Juventud, Cuba, 1984) remembers that he had to spend two weeks confined to the hotel. They both remember it, with its own interruptions from the moment in which it occurred, as fast-paced, passionate and fun, as always happens when working alongside Álex De La Iglesia.

The character played by Blanca Suárez (Madrid, 1988), Lorena, did not come to her by chance but rather received a call from the Basque filmmaker to tell her that she had a role tailored for her: “Alex called me and told me that he had written a film and when did we start”, he recalls. This actress-director duo had already coincided in El Bar, and works again with the Madrilenian acting as muse of the genre of action, comedy and… the truth is that qualifying this film within one is complicated. Together with Blanca and Rubén Cortada, Alberto San Juan, Ernesto Alterio and Carlos Areces complete the cast that accompanies this couple on a road trip that begins well and continues as Álex De La Iglesia knows how to do: as no one expected.

This trip is very reminiscent of that crazy -and always denied by those involved-journey in BlaBlacar by Álvaro de Marichalar, which is now almost part of the recent popular imagination. “Yes, it was commented on the set that it was very similar to this anecdote”, they confirm. Thus, in that car, San Juan would be the driver, Suárez has had to be the fixed passenger who travels every weekend with him, while Alterio and Cortada could be the marichalares that disrupt a normally calm route. And, from that afternoon on, it ends up transformed into a road movie as wild as it is delirious because, between the action scenes, romanticism sneaks in and, of course, that trademark black comedy.

“Working with Rubén is always such a good vibe”, confesses Blanca. “It’s all relaxing, it’s cool that on a shoot, which is always a place of great stress and in a hurry, to have someone next to you who transmits so much peace”, she adds, while the actor laughs and says “yes, I’m always calm. Also, I feel very comfortable with her. And the same calm that I transmit from her I can also feel with her”.

That calm was not bad for them to work with Álex De La Iglesia, who is said to be one of the filmmakers who puts the most passion into his work. Passion and intensity, of course: “He doesn’t disappoint, he’s always on top. It’s a real experience, sometimes wonderful and sometimes it makes you suffer a bit because their stories, the scripts, are not usually easy. He not only writes what comes into his head, but he also does them”, says Blanca, emphasizing this last word a lot. “He is a very energetic and super enthusiastic person, he is almost like a child. When he likes something, he lets you know, but when he doesn’t like something that much, too. It’s very intense”, she concludes.

“I really like those moments of high energy”, adds Rubén. “You have to understand that this is not personal, that it is his job and he does it that way. I identified those most tense moments with the army, in his day I had a captain who was spectacular, he gave the orders and then he laughed. When I saw Álex giving the orders, I imagined him laughing inside”, recalls Rubén.

It was an intense and fun shoot, a spirit that is transferred to El Cuarto Pasajero, with moments of humor and a mess that escalates exponentially as the minutes go by. In fact, there are sequences in which you think you can’t get more complicated and, in effect, the complication goes up a notch.

Although it is very much a thriller, Blanca Suárez confesses that, when Álex De La Iglesia gave her the first script, he told her it was a romantic comedy. “But when I saw the first pass, I suddenly understood: yes, it is. It’s a romantic thriller ! There is some romanticism that is maintained throughout the film but during filming, as it was hard, I came to lose”, she explains. Yes, as surprising as it may seem, love is between chases, misunderstandings, cheating and A LOT of punches. The ones that Rubén also receives, whom practically all the characters end up hitting at some point. “And, in fact, Carlos Areces broke my face in one scene!” She remembers between laughs.

“I think people are going to have a great time”, says Blanca. “They leave laughing, it is a very enjoyable movie”. However, Rubén goes further and assures that there is a ‘very Álex’ residue left after having seen her. “It’s not just having a good time at the movies”, he says.

Both Rubén and Blanca are comfortable in this hybrid genre between comedy, romance and action. Although they recognize that making people laugh is not easy. This is where, in addition, they come face to face with whom they themselves have defined as ‘heavyweights’ of acting, Ernesto Alterio and Alberto San Juan, great actors, also in comedy. “Everything comes naturally to them”, admits Cortada. “It comes from within, they are so good that they handle the times and the phrases in an incredible way. Sometimes, Rubén and I would laugh watching them perform and we would hopefully one day turn out like them”, she adds.

“It’s a lot of fun to make others laugh, but it’s also very difficult”, admits Blanca. “Sometimes, something going well in comedy depends on two looks not crossing, it’s a very delicate line”, completes Rubén, who also confesses that at some point he ‘lent’ his character a spontaneous laugh that came out while filmed, and which was kept in the final footage.

It is said soon, but it has been 15 years since we “met” Blanca Suárez (Madrid, 1988). How was your summer?
It has gone quite well. I managed to go away and spend a fairly quiet ‘little month’. Sometimes, it is good to disconnect and get out of your normal environment a little to get away from your life, see it with perspective and come back with enthusiasm.

And have you brought any reflection?
Not especially. I know it’s okay to spend time doing reflections for one. But vacations are also to rest… from you. So, I’ve rested from myself (laughs). Would you say that you are in a good vital moment?
Yes. Although I don’t think I’ve been in a bad time in life in general. I think that in the end everything is like a roller coaster that, if you push me, even goes for days. In other words, we don’t wake up one day the same as the day before. So, I think I feel happiness every day and every moment, but come on, being calm…, it’s enough for me.

How would you describe the current moment in your career?
Like a serene moment, really, because there have been some very stressful moments. Well, the truth is that quite well. I’m not one of those who turned 30 and suddenly had a ‘shock’. I have more now than when I turned 30, suddenly, in October I am 34. And you see that you move forward and that you were no longer 29 yesterday. It is a rare moment. Blanca Suárez triumphs as a Cazanazi vigilante in Jaguar, the new Netflix series, and she already has two films pending release. She says that she prefers not to stop. Everything she does transcends and what she touches turns to gold.

“It is true that I have been working almost non-stop for more than ten years, but I cannot say if I am at my best, or that I have reached the place where I wanted to be. I have just premiered a series and I have finished shooting two films, El Test by Dani de la Orden, and El Cuarto Pasajero by Álex de la Iglesia. This profession is very mutant. Everything changes from one moment to another. Now I am not immersed in any filming and that totally conditions your life. The perception that the actors are always filming. The best example is the scene in which the leader of that team, played by Iván Marcos, draws the true heart of the Jaguar sitting in front of the painting of Goya’s Executions. “Recording at the Prado was something exceptional, a high point of the shoot”, recalls the actor. “The image and the words were closely related. Both refer to the Spanish resistance against the invading forces. The series is not based on real events nor is it a political pamphlet. It is an action thriller. But one of its great values ​​is to remember the almost 10,000 Spaniards who were sent to concentration camps with the approval of Franco, and heroes like Cristino García, who fought with La Nueve to drive the Nazis out of Paris”.

That essence of action, the keyword shared by the five actors to define this Bambú Producciones project for Netflix, jumps from the Ritz hotel, the Piquer galleries and other iconic settings in the capital to Cabo de Gata, in Almería. I have explored toxic masculinity a lot, that reinforces how hetero he is due to insecurities or fears”.

In this tortuous path, he has the help of the most peculiar member of the group, another survivor of the camps whom they call Deaf but who is actually rather mute. “The first thing I thought is: ‘How do I do this?'” Says Adrián Lastra. “I’ve gotten into a pretty big eggplant, in fact Sordo changed a lot during the rehearsal process. My greatest fear was to find out how he spoke, but with a lot of personal study and help from professionals specialized in problems in the mouth, such as a cut tongue, I began to glimpse how he could communicate”.

The truth is that a gesture between his character and Óscar Casas’s is enough to give skin and truth to his bond. “I just had to know Oscar well and love him.
